The Layout

The SH&LLRR is a freelance interpretation of rail lines in and around the Southern Highlands. Built in a 15 x 7.5m shed, the layout was commenced in April 2021. The design of the layout is an around-the-wall and walk-in style of over 245m track.

The layout includes trackage from Picton in the north, Dombarton in the east, Bomaderry south on the coast and Moss Vale to the south-west. A prominent part of the layout is the Loop Line passing through Thirlmere to Mittagong. The location of the layout is 50m from the real Loop Line in Hill Top.

The layout includes scratch-built and kit bashed structures, running scratch-built and ready to run locomotives, wagons, and coaches. Rolling-stock includes NSW prototype from the early 20th Century to modern day. The layout is a work in progress. The philosophy is to lay track in sections and complete all landscaping of the section before commencing the next section. Landscape and completed sections include rail yards at Thirlmere, Loop Line track from Thirlmere, through Hill Top and onwards to the concrete sleeper works at Braemar. Recent work displays Mittagong station and northwards past the coal loader at Tahmoor, across the Picton Viaduct over Stonequarry Creek and down over the eastern escarpment using the (never completed) line towards Dombarton.
