The Layout

NSWGR Waterfall to Scarborough 1953

Modelling the NSW locations of Waterfall, Metropolitan Junction, Metropolitan Colliery, Otford and Scarborough in 1953.

Layout Description

The layout is a walk around point to point style layout. Scenery is limited to Metropolitan Junction and Waterfall and continues to be added. Control system: DCC NCE radio and Wi-Fi.

I have built a high level mainline 10 track fiddle yard, a low level mainline 9 track fiddle yard, a 4 track storage yard representing a coal mine and a low level 6 track storage yard (not used for operating sessions). The 2 fiddle yards are the places where trains and locomotives are reversed at each end of my mainline, allowing me to stage a set of trains for each operating session. I have enough storage tracks in each yard for an operating session to last two and half hours before I need to re stage trains.

Trains based on NSWGR 1953 consists are run to a sequence using train cards to inform drivers of what to do. Most mainline semaphore signals operate and are interlocked with turnouts. Drivers are required to follow the signal indication. A simple interlocked ‘electric staff’ is used for the single line Coalcliff tunnel.

All locomotives are sound equipped and drivers are encouraged to comply with NSW steam era whistle rules. Currently only four trains are shunted in the fiddle yards during operating sessions, including the South Coast Daylight Express, where I have a second locomotive staged in the correct direction so no turning of engines is needed. One train that is shunted in the fiddle yard uses a 30 class tank engine, not requiring turning. Most tracks on the layout have uncoupling magnets where required to minimise handling of models during shunting.
