Layout Description

Santa Fe Ontario and Western Railroad

The Santa Fe Ontario and Western Railroad is a freelance model railroad based on part of the route of the New York Ontario and Western Railroad which was the first Class 1 railroad to shut down in the USA in 1956. My freelance railroad was built by the Santa Fe Railroad and runs over a lot of the roadbed of the original New York Ontario and Western Railroad.

Most of the rolling stock is Santa Fe with some Freelance Doodlebugs and multiple unit passenger trains. The layout is run on DCC with nearly all units equipped with sound. The layout is mainly run point to point but it can be switched to a double track continuous loop for open days and convention visits. It is also used for operating sessions using train orders.

Atlantic Coast Railroad

The Atlantic Coast Railroad is a small modular freelance switching railroad based on the area around the coast of New Jersey. The rolling stock was originally interchanged with the nearby Santa Fe Ontario and Western Railroad. Passenger services were handled by small gasoline powered doodlebugs, often pulling trailers, or by drover cabooses on the rear of mixed trains. Freight trains use mainly small diesel road locos or diesel switchers.

The railroad can be operated as a switching puzzle using a set of rolling stock that has been painted in several colors. A set of cards has been made up and each series of moves is shown on a card using the different colored rolling stock. All the rolling stock used for the switching puzzle is small and normally a Proto 2000 Alco S2 loco is used to move everything around.
