Cassino

NSWGR (Standard Gauge) and QR (Narrow Gauge)

Layout Description

This layout operates with a 5 Amp NCE DCC system, using both wired and wireless Procabs, along with support for Engine Driver and WiThrottle apps.
Operations and Control

Operations aim to create an immersive experience, placing the operator in control of a train within its location and time period. North Coast Control manages train movements and safety across the layout. Headsets at crossing loops and sidings allow operators to request authority to proceed and stay informed. A phone system links Grafton Loops, Acacia Ridge, and North Coast Control.
Layout Design and Development

Originally modelling the Grafton to Acacia Ridge main line (plus the Cassino to Murwillumbah branch), the layout is set in 1991 and includes nearly 140 metres of standard gauge track.

The growing popularity of QR 12mm narrow gauge prompted expansion. Acacia Ridge Yard was adapted for narrow gauge, and the layout extended to South Brisbane Interstate and the Fisherman Islands branch, enabling narrow gauge freight runs. Dual gauge sections were later replaced with separate standard and narrow gauge lines, boosting capacity. Narrow gauge suburban services now run through Park Road to South Brisbane, with a planned extension to Sunnybank.
Layout Format

The layout supports standard gauge, narrow gauge, or dual gauge operations. Built in a walk-in, around-the-walls style over multiple decks, about 90% of the first two levels are scenicked. The upper deck beyond Acacia Ridge is not yet scenicked.

New features continue to be added as more historical and operational details of the North Coast line are discovered.
