Tehachapi Pass

1980s Western United States

Layout Description

The Southern Pacific moved freight in the western United States by conquering the Tehachapi Pass which allowed trains access from northern California to the south.

It is a steep railway at 2.4% and tortuous in its twists, turns and tunnels. The chief landmark is Tehachapi Loop where trains loop round and over themselves to gain elevation.

This layout models numerous signature scenes from the Tehachapi grade and trains gain over 100cm of elevation over a 100m mainline.

Trains over 10 meters in length use multiple helper sets to conquer the grade.

While scenery is at a basic stage, full operation is in place. Critical to smooth operations is the trackwork, adequate wiring, tuning locos, meticulous attention to rolling stock and the keen use of features found in DCC, NCE and Tsunami sound capabilities.
